2018, Nylon flags, 5 x 8 ft each
"One Nation" is a series of four black and white flags that seek to refresh our notions of national identity. The first pole holds a monochrome version of the American flag that is traditionally used to honor fallen police and military officers, a reminder of the critical role these individuals play in safeguarding our country. The remaining banners display the stripes alone; divorced from the familiar stars, the stripes become an echo of the historical prison uniform, a symbol of all those incarcerated in the criminal justice system – and a reminder that these citizens, too, are built into the fabric of our country.
Installed at the Lillstreet Rooftop Gallery, Chicago.
