Mundillo (Little World)
2020, Steel, 14’ x 8’ x 9’8"
A monument to women’s work and the cultural dynamism of New York City, Mundillo (Little World) translates the patterns of traditional Puerto Rican lacework from the intimacy of the home to the visibility of the city square, from the softness of cotton to the resilience of steel. As the sculpture stretches across the plaza, the openings in its surface fill with the colors and textures of the surrounding neighborhood, weaving this vibrant community into the very fabric of the piece.
Originally commissioned (2020-2021) for installation in West Farms Square, Bronx, NY as a Community Commission by NYC Department of Transportation Arts, in partnership with the Bronx River Arts Center.
Reinstalled (2021-2022) at 97th St and Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY by NYC DOT Arts and the Columbus Amsterdam Business Improvement District.
