Aperiodic Asymmetry is a geometric mosaic created according to a rare mathematical structure found in both the mosaics of ancient Islam and the quasicrystals of modern physics. By introducing irregularity to these patterns, I investigate the disparity between the promise of this fundamental order – be it spiritual or scientific – and the chaos of contemporary living, the precision of sacred geometry and the imperfection of the individual hand. As small inconsistencies in tile placement magnify over the course of the work, the pattern begins to break down, splitting apart or overlapping to express both a desire for and alienation from this underlying order.
